Justin Waples awarded a 2025 RYA Impact Award

Two decades of volunteering, inspiring hundreds of young sailors at RCYC

Justin’s impact has been profound and lasting, shaping the culture and future of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club and its youth section, the Corinthian Otters. Over two decades of volunteering, he has inspired hundreds of young sailors, created lasting friendships and nurtured future generations of Club members. He continues to train the youngest Otters — typically aged 8 to 10 — with patience, encouragement and a focus on fun, often providing one-to-one support to help nervous children gain confidence on the water. Importantly, he extends this inclusive spirit to parents too, inspiring them to get involved on the water and fostering friendships that strengthen the Club community. His playful and approachable manner, exemplified when one of his training groups named themselves “The Dolphins” and he proudly became their “Dolphin Trainer,” has created lasting memories for many families.

Under his leadership as Otter Chairman, over £30,000 was raised, funding vital fleet improvements including new rowing boats, ribs and training dinghies. This not only strengthened the Otters but ensured a sustainable foundation for future members.

His enthusiasm for the RCODs has revitalised that fleet, and his introduction of classes to the River such as Flying Fifteens, along with hosting open events, has broadened participation and strengthened racing activity at the Club.

In 2025, as Rear Commodore Sailing, Justin spearheaded the Women on Water initiative, transforming an idea into a thriving, inclusive programme. Since its launch in June, over 75 women have taken part — many experiencing sailing for the first time. Through his tireless organisation, encouragement and mentorship, he has helped build confidence, reconnect former sailors with the sport, and create a supportive, social environment that aligns with RYA goals for greater female participation.

Justin has also been instrumental in the success of Discover Sailing days, ensuring new members, friends and complete newcomers experience sailing in a relaxed and welcoming way. Even when unable to sail himself (post hip replacement!), he worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the events successful and encourage the “ripple effect” of new volunteers.

His commitment spans 21 years of continuous volunteering, long after his own children outgrew the Otters. His leadership, inclusivity and vision have not only enriched the present but have left a clear legacy: a stronger, more welcoming, better equipped and more vibrant Club community.
