It is with great sadness that we announce the death of David Duke. David died suddenly on the 12th February. Although he had not been well for some time, those around him would hardly have noticed as he continued a full programme of sailing with Carole at Parkstone Yacht Club as well as both of them willingly undertaking more than their fair share of race officer duties.
David has been sailing Fifteens for very many years and will be well known to many in the Class. He and Carole have, over the years, been very active Club racers and at open meetings. They were to be seen competing regularly at events such as Falmouth Week and Poole Week. David and Carole were members at Grafham SC for many years and enjoyed great success there. After David’s retirement they decided on a move down to Poole and joined the Parkstone Fleet where they already knew so many people. As David had always loved to own a Classic boat as well as a modern one, he and Carole lost no time in joining also Royal Motor Yacht Club where they sailed the absolutely immaculate “Copy Cat” 2932. David and Carole were usually to be found amongst the front runners in both fleets and frequently crossed the line first. The photo shows David and Carole competing in Poole Week 2010 in “Mowzer”.
David was extremely knowledgeable on the technical side and was very happy to share this knowledge with anyone who had a question or who just wanted to talk something through, whether it involved tuning the boat, maintenance or, heaven forbid, repairs. He was a quiet man but always very ready to engage in conversation whatever the subject. We will all miss David and our thoughts go out to Carole.
