UK National Championships supported by UK Global at Parkstone Yacht Club – Preview
The Flying Fifteen class is staging one of the major events of the season, the Flying Fifteen UK National Championships supported by UK Global organised by Parkstone Yacht Club in conjunction with the UK Flying Fifteen Association (UKFFA).
Host club, the Parkstone Yacht Club will be organising racing in Poole Bay. Racing commences on Wednesday 24 July and concludes on Saturday 27 July on courses which will be windward-leeward-triangle or windward-leeward, as described in the sailing instructions. Our thanks to our generous day sponsors Mar-Key Group, Bournemouth Digital, Hyde Sails and The Fencing Centre.
The Flying Fifteen National Championships have attracted a large fleet with over 45 boats registered. Fleets have come from all over the country from Scotland, Blackpool, the Lake District, many of the central lakes and the South Coast. There is even a competitor from Durban in South Africa taking part in the championship. The largest contingent comes from the home club with 16 boats taking part.
The entry list includes, World Champions, National Champions, regular club sailors, a wide variety of ages and a good mix of male and female crews.
Amongst the big names is the current World and National Champion, Steve Goacher from Royal Windermere YC sailing with Tim Harper. Steve has recently won the Scottish Championships and was the runner up at the Northern Area Championships so comes to Parkstone on good form.
However, there are a number of other high profile Flying Fifteen teams on the entry sheet who are expected to challenge for the title including the current European Champion Hamish MacKay from Royal Thames YC sailing with Andrew Lawson.
Richard Lovering and Matt Alvarado from Hayling Island SC won the 2017 Nationals in Falmouth and the 2015 Nationals regatta in Clyde.
On the podium at major regattas are the Anglo/Irish combo of Charles Apthorp and Alan Green. This team were 4th at the 2017 World Championship in Napier, New Zealand.
Three times World Champions, Graham Vials and Chris Turner were the Nationals winners the last time they were held at Parkstone Yacht Club in 2014
David Tabb and Chewey Sherrell, competing on home waters, are regularly in the top ten at championship events. There will of course be any number of other teams out to usurp the favourites.
In addition to the sailing there are daily prize giving socials sponsored by Magic Marine and Ringwood Brewery, giving competitors an opportunity to discuss the on water action over a pint and there will be raffle prizes to be won – you will need to be there to win.
There is also a Championship Dinner sponsored by UK Global on Thursday 25 July, been held in Parkstone’s new clubhouse.
