I am thinking of converting my boat to a center console, it's a Mk 4 Windebank so currently has the wooden cross member with everything mounted to that. Is it a difficult conversion and can anyone offer any tips/ advise, I don't know whether to buy an off the shelf console or make one myself from GRP/ Carbon. Also my boat has floor tanks, I am considering removing these as part of the install, is that a good idea?

    Hi Lee.

We did this to 2663, a Windebank 3.

    See http://www.business-internet.co.uk/2663/ for details.

The only modification since then has been a subsequent owner found the angled wooden plate under the console rotted so has changed that to a floor mounted plate similar to modern fifteens. The boat is currently at Langorse SC in S Wales.

I wouldn't take the floor tanks out unless you have to - why remove buoyancy?

    Cheers

    Mike

    Hi Mike / Lee

Is there an issue in removing an part of the boat that I would imagine is a strong point. I guess Mike you must have considered this when you converted 2663 - did you notice any difference after the conversion?

We were very nervous about removing the lateral stiffening provided by the traveler we removed, but although the boat did deform a little when maximum rig tension was applied her subsequent sailing record proved it didn't make the boat go slower!
