    I have been wondering about the difference between the open fleet boat models available on the used market and how they compare speed and quality wise, obviously the Ovington Mk9 and 10 are well known and very well regarded but how do the Coryn, Dingwall and Windebank Mk10's compare? would they be competitive at club and open event level? What are the construction techniques used in each and are they as durable as the Ovington boats? Cheers Lee

    Hi Lee

    I have sailed both a late Coryn (3597) which I still own and also an early Ovi X (3796) which I am currently chartering. I can say with my hand on my heart that any difference between the two is more than absorbed by the way the boats are sailed and any inherent design differences barely noticeable. That is at club level of course. The guys in Morgat at the moment (and their sail numbers) will tell you that to compete at the top level you need everything working for you.

    In terms of construction I would say that the Coryn is slightly stronger (it has a closed foredeck bulkhead whilst the Ovi has a half deck which may make a difference) but in terms of stiffness you would not notice between boats of a similar age - I am sure.

    What is interesting however is the position of the keels. It would appear that there is as much as a 7 inch difference between the anchor points (the Coryn is further forward). This is a significant difference and may account for some different opinions about crew trim positions to stop the stern dragging (well forward in the Ovi X).

    Don't know about the Dingwall but they do seem to have a reputation for being very quick - the Windy X? I think the molds ended up going to Australia not sure if they are still used.
