Burton SC event report and end of year roundup

This year’s series comprised open meetings at Dovestone, Royal Windermere, Ogston, Bassenthwaite and Burton Sailing clubs. A big thank you to these clubs and in particular the Flying Fifteen Fleet captains at each for hosting the events and enabling the Series to take place.

This year we introduced a training element into the series. Due to a number of factors including;

  • the fact that the Royal Windermere event was run alongside the northern Championships,
  • that Ogston had to change dates late on and
  • Burton had no wind on the Saturday morning

the training was confined to Dovestone and Bassenthwaite. We had a thought provoking session from Andrew Weatherspoon on teamwork followed by a rules session at Dovestone. At Bassenthwaite valuable tips and insights from the dynamic duo of Steve and Phil Evans on sniffing out the wind and spinnaker work. Thanks to all contributors, this is something we would like to continue next year.

The series spanned the sailing year, starting at Dovestone in April and finishing at Burton in September. In all there were 43 competing boats representing 14 clubs. As you would expect the lion’s share of competitors came from the 5 clubs holding events however the series did also prove attractive to boats from 9 other clubs, some of whom were regular series competitors.

As in recent years the winners were not decided until the last event at Burton. The weekend dawned with a thick mist and no wind, unfortunately this meant that the planned Training session on the racing rules which was planned to involve an on the water element had to be cancelled. In due course the mist lifted and a light and growing breeze developed. This enabled 2 races to be sailed. On Saturday night the entertainment was a combination of a casino night and watching England struggle against Wales in the Rugby world cup. Sorrows had to be treated with liquid restorative. On Sunday the weather was fine and warm and the light and fickle breeze returned to enable 3 more races to be sailed. The outcome of the series went down to the last race as it resulted in a tie on points between the first and second boats only separated on countback.

The Series winners were Andy and Tom Goddard from Dovestone SC on 4 points closely followed in second place by Mike Moore and Michaela Sheard from Bassenthwaite SC narrowly losing out on countback. The third place was taken by Colin Pierce and Mandy Thackray/David Hill from Dovestone SC on 5 points. They also won the prize for first silver boat. The first Classic boat was sailed by Graham and Alistair Lamond in 8th place overall. Their win at the last event proved that a well maintained and sailed classic in the right conditions inland can be just as fast as the modern versions.

A special mention should be made of the 3 boats that showed most commitment to the series. Mike Moore and Michaela Sheard, Colin Pierce and Mandy Thackray and Rob Goodison and Jonathan Mallory all completed  4 of the 5 events.

Waples Wines sponsors Flying15 Northern Travellers seriesThe Sponsors of the Events “Waples Wines”, are particularly appreciated for providing a high profile for the series, support with the poster and publicity and of course for the high quality of the liquid prizes. We are hopeful that they will return to support the 2016 series. For 2016 plans are already developing and if possible the number of events might be increased to 7 with a higher qualification requirement of 3 events. More information will be supplied when available. The series events will be published by Christmas if possible.
