The first Scottish flying fifteen traveller event of the season was held in the stunning highland surroundings of Loch Tummel close to the historic town of Pitlochry. With dry weather and good winds forecast 5 boats braved the slightly chilly conditions to enjoy an excellent weekend of 6 races held over the two days of the bank holiday weekend. Although this was a slightly lower turn out than expected with a number of last minute call offs the travelling boats enjoyed some close but fair racing in conditions that ranged from full on to benign. After rigging up on the Saturday morning ( otherwise known as remembering how to put the thing back together again..) the fleet headed out for three back to back races. The race officer set out a W style course that made full use of the loch and had the boats screaming along on blisteringly fast 3 sail reaches with testing upwind legs. Over the day, the local knowledge of David & Angie Sword paid off in the shifting and fluctuating breeze with a perfect score of three straight bullets. However pushing them hard all the way were the teams of George Purves / Stevie Brummell and Dan Challis / Kirsten Challis who shared the runner up spots. Retiring to the club house afterwards the aches and pains of the day were washed away with a few libations and bbq steaks. Being the first event of the season some crews admitted to still being a bit rusty - sailing like two cats in a bath - was perhaps the best (attributable ) quote. The Sunday dawned bright and clear with a light breeze that quickly filled on to a boisterous 20+ knots with some vicious gusts. The races course was now shared with a fleet of RS 200's and 400's who were running a training weekend. Sensibly, the race officer set an Olympic trapezoid course that allowed all three fleets to race concurrently without impinging on each other’s racing. Sending the races off on quick order the first race was won convincingly by Purves / Brammel who were revelling in the strong breeze. In the second and final races the winds had eased off allowing the somewhat lighter paring of Challis / Challis to squeeze in a couple of victories to round off the weekend. Our thanks to Loch Tummel Sailing Club for the warm welcome, well run racing and excellent facilities. All agreed that they had had some great sailing and this was a good warm up for the upcoming Scottish Championships to be held next month at the holy loch sailing club on the Clyde.
