Final event in 2019 Waples Northern Series - Preview

This weekend sees the final event in the 2019 Waples Wines Northern Traveller series take place at Notts County SC, and all indications are that it's going to be a good one.

Leading the series for most of this year have been Mike Preston & Hannah/Chris Robinson from Blackpool & Fleetwood YC, and they will be leading a continent of no fewer than five B&FYC boats making the trip to Notts County SC. But with only two events counting to the overall series score Preston & Robinson are by no means a shoo-in for the 2019 title.

Action from the 2018 Notts County SC Open

Chris & Marion Bowen from Northampton SC won the Waples series overall in 2018 and are in the frame again this year having already scored a first place at the last event at Burton SC - as indeed is the pairing of John Hanson & Helen Selden from Datchet SC who won the Dovestone SC event back in June. If either of these crews manage to acheive a top score this weekend at Notts County SC they will also take the overall series trophy.

Handicap scoring is used for all the Waples series events meaning that Classic & Silver fleet boats are in contention for - and fully competitive in - the overall series results - but in addition there is a trophy for top Classic boat as well, and again a number of crews are in the running for that.

Further down the fleet there will be plenty of action and competition too, especially as the final round at Notts County is traditionally very well supported by visitors and often has one of the biggest turnouts of the year. The home fleet at Notts County is actually fairly small but works hard to get every boat on the water for the event by recruiting sailors from the other club fleets into Flying Fifteens for the occasion.

Last year this included three sailors from the junior fleet who all acquitted themselves well in the front of their respective Flying Fifteens, and for 2019 things have progressed even further with two boats in the event being both helmed and crewed by some of the very competent junior sailors from the Notts County SC Scorpion fleet.

Notts County offers a friendly welcome, good facilities and easy launching - oh, and plenty of camping and motorhome space - so, even if you've not taken part in an open meeting before, why not come down this weekend and join in the fun? See you there!
