Draycote Water - Dikerogammarus Haemobaphes

Severn Trent has informed us that we have Dikerogammarus Haemobaphes.

What the hell is that I hear you say. Well it’s a shrimp which has arrived "allegedly" as a result of Severn Trent pumping it in from the River Leam. This is not the famed Killer Shrimp, but it is a non-native invasive species.

However, this means that DWSC needs to revise its procedures with regards to visiting boats (and club boats that travel). So with the experience of going to Grafham, one would think washing boats was the order of the day but evidentially not.

We are now told that the best practice is to follow the Check, Clean, Dry programme which has been endorsed by all the relevant authorities, including the RYA. It is national best practice and has been for a few years, so people should be familiar with it. Well we are not and nor are Grafham!

Anyway DWSC have therefore revised the declaration that they require visiting boats to sign from the original Clean Boat Declaration to the Check Clean Dry Declaration (which is attached).

The requirement to dry means that it is no longer relevant to offer a boat washing facility for visitors arriving on site. The actions have to be taken well before the boats arrive on site (the best practice is to dry for 2 days to ensure that no non-native invasive species survive). It is also important, in view of our own infestation, to get a commitment from our visitors to follow the procedure having left our site.

So the club have asked the Draycote F15 Fleet to ensure that the requirement is publicised to our visitors. You will be required to sign this declaration and you need to know about it before turning up at the club.

Regards, Richard Hope
