Despite the rotten weather this year, seventeen Flying Fifteen teams entered for the annual Datchet Winter Warmup. It’s a popular 8 race, open series during the four Sundays of February. Conditions this year went from flat calms to full-on force 4’s.
Racing has been very close this season and several teams have at times been in grasping distance of the title. After the first weekend, the strong contenders to beat looked to be three great teams – Linder and Sweetman, Apthorp and Simpson and the local Datchet champs, Firth and Mumford. Four weeks is a long time in sailing, and as we entered the final weekend consistency was paying. Andy Clarke and Nadia Melnikova, Silver category winners at the Midwinter Championship, were right up there with Apthorp/Simpson. Also in close points contention were Adam and Emma Mangan, Matt Glasgow and Gareth Brown.
The last Sunday, in Force 3-4 and perfect for Fifteening, we saw excellent racing – lots of overtaking on flat-out spinnaker reaches. Clarke/Melnikova were frustrated by a flat tyre and missed the first race. Nonetheless, with two earlier race wins they took series by just one point from the Mangans and five points ahead of Matt Glasgow and Gareth Brown.
Results: 1st 3378 Andy Clarke/Nadia Melnikova(Datchet), 2nd 3653 Adam and Emma Mangan(Datchet), 3rd 3537 Matt Glasgow/Gareth Brown (Hayling), 4th 3932 Chris Swallow/John Tuckwey(Burton), 5th 3732 Andrew Fairley, Matt Whittaker(Datchet). Silver Category; 3378 Andy Clark and Nadia Melnikova (Datchet).
