18 Flying Fifteens entered the 50th Anniversary regatta at Holy Loch Sailing Club on the Firth of Clyde over the weekend of 11th/12th September. The regatta is the penultimate event in the Scottish Travellers Series which concludes at Loch Lomond on the 2nd and 3rd October.
The home fleet of classic and silver boats were joined by visitors including a couple of more modern boats from the Island of Bute, Tayvallich , Loch Ard, Monklands and Cardwell Bay. A westerly wind blew hard down the loch for the first race with more manageable conditions for the other 3 races.
Local pundits were split over who might win the event with Bobby Salmond (Vamoose) , Dan Challis (Genesis) and Graham Campbell (Vedra) all tipped to win. Vedra pulled out of race one with gear failure and Genesis came home ahead of Vamoose in both Saturday races. On Sunday morning Vamoose took the first race with Genesis second. The final race saw Genesis put on a pre race wind up against Vamoose that would put the Americas Cup to shame.
As a cat and mouse battle ensued around the loch Vedra took the opportunity to push through to victory with Vamoose finishing 3rd to Genesis. Dan Challis sailing with fiancée Kirsten Shaughnesy were clearly delighted to win both the fleet prize and the overall regatta trophy. Further down the fleet competitors enjoyed their own battles and the club and sponsors kept everyone entertained and fed throughout the weekend.
