Round 5 of the Waples Wines Northern Traveler Series took place over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd September.
Saturday 2nd September dawned warm, sunny and absolutely no wind which had unfortunately been the forecast and on this occasion the weather predictions proved wholly accurate. However we greeted 6 visitors, 3 from Notts County and 1 each from Chew Valley, Ullswater and Northampton. It was clear the wind forecast was not going to improve so after discussion with the competitors the decision was made to abandon racing at 2pm, a brave decision being so early but as it transpired it was a good call as the little breeze there was disappeared completely.
As expected things improved and Sunday morning brought with it grey skies but a steady breeze which increased as the day progressed. The race committee set a windward / leeward course and this proved very popular. Due to the lack of sailing on the previous day the decision was made to have 3 races back to back and Ian Cadwallader and Ellie Devereux set the tone by taking the first race from Jeremy Arnold and John Allen with Chris and Marian Bowen coming in 3rd. The second race saw the places for 1st and 2nd reversed with again Chris and Marion coming 3rd. The scene was set for the deciding race to deliver the potential series winner and so it proved with Ian and Ellie grabbing another 1st and with it the Series to take the BSC trophy, Jeremy and John held 2nd place while Malcolm and Elliot Hall secured 3rd place overall following a superb final race which saw them finish the race in 2nd place.
We can all now look forward to the final race in the series which will be at Notts County on the weekend of the 7th and 8th of October.
