Fourteen Flying Fifteens competed in the Datchet Open Meeting on March 13/14. Wind conditions foiled racing on Saturday, but PRO Mike Coulson managed to fit four races into the programme for Sunday – and what fantastic conditions were on offer! Hairy three sail reaches in bright sunshine were the order of the day.
Race results were very close and at the end of the third race, any one of three teams could have won the event. It was all down to the last race. Justin Waples and Ian Stowe took the lead, leaving Tom Hall and Grayson Eacott fighting off Matt Glasgow and John Mitchell, and Ian Linder and Kevin Sweetman. Hall/Eacott put in a fantastic performance to pull into the lead by the final triangle. Strongly challenged by Waples/Stowe they hung on to win the race and the event.
Points for first place were actually a tie break for Hall/Eacott and Waples/Stowe. Ian Linder and Kevin Sweetman came third. The Silver category winners were Clark/Melnikova, in 3378 “The Russian Boat”, who in fourth position also won the Trophy for Best Datchet Team. The next FF Open at Datchet is October 16/17 and is the finale of the “Southern Travellers Series”.
Results: 1st 3725 Tom Hall/Grayson Eacott(Hayling/Datchet), 2nd 3716 Justin Waples/Ian Stowe(RCYC), 3rd 3851 Ian Linder/Kevin Sweetman (Burghfield), 4th 3378 Andy Clark/Nadia Melnikova(Datchet), 5th 3539 John Hanson/Helen Selden(Datchet). Silver Category and Best Datchet Team; 3378 Andy Clark and Nadia Melnikova (Datchet).
